11:01 am
good morning, everybody. thank you for joining us. i'm jon kelley. marla tellez has the day off. the bay area braces for a big weekend of festivities. the heart of it all, san francisco. a little bit of something for everybody over the next couple days. on the buffet of outdoor activity, the 49ers are at home against the bills. giants playoff baseball, a music festival shs the america's cup, and look up in the sky, it's the blue angels. we'll start off with our live coverage with bob redell and the fleet week festivities. what's going on, my man? >> reporter: good morning to you, john. we're aboard the u.s.s. macon island. tours of this vessel here in san francisco start in just under 24 hours from now. one thing that will strike you is just how large she is.
11:02 am
at 850 feet long, she's only a couple hundred feet shorter than an aircra carrier. her flight deck, as you can see, can handle lots of helicopters. it's an assault ship capable of carrying 1,000 sailors and a detachment of 1200 marines. some of whom you just saw. her yeek anemic feature is the well deck. it can be filled with water and slunk slightly so hovers can come and go through the ship's rear. >> the assault ships were designed to be able to put the marines where we need to put them and storm the beach. since that time, they have taken on a whole new mission set for disaster response. the same way that we get the marines to shore, we can get that humanitarian assistance like relief supplies, we can do that. ships like this were used in new orleans after hurricane katrina and in haiti following the big earthquake down there.
11:03 am
>> reporter: commissioned in 2009 the macon island has the latest technology. a combination of gas turbines and electric motors that save four million gallons in fuel. and that right there that you should be looking at now is the ship's steering wheel. it's impressive because it's not really that impressive. it's very small and unassuming. what might surprise you is who typically has their hands on that wheel. those are sailors who are just 18 to 20 years old. a lot of responsibility for someone who only started driving a car a couple of years prior. back here live on the flight deck up there is the bridge. if you come down here, you can see where a lot of the aircraft are assembled. this is an area you'll be able to tour when the tours start tomorrow and run through monday. 9:00 through 3:00 p.m.
11:04 am
it's a very popular attraction. they are promising long lines. if you want to get on board this ship to take a look to see what the navy has to offer, you'll want to arrive early. reporting live here at pier 32, bob redell, nbc bay area news. >> all right, bob. thank you very much. he's one of the lucky ones that gets to check that out. at and t park, you can feel the excitement. treated to two playoff games. amy has been camping out since 4:30 a.m. she has the forecast on lockdown. a good morning to you, a long day so far. >> reporter: but a good day, jon, for sure. so as you said, we have been here since 4:30 this morning. and pretty much the sea gulls were asleep at that point. 8:00 the buzz started happening. right now we have grounds crew
11:05 am
guys working on the field. they are painting the 2012 post season logo. getting the field prepped with all the paraphernalia that represents the october quest that we're on. with tv crews coming in, they are miking the stadium. it's very, very busy right now. we have tours coming in. but probably the best news to share with fans so far today that broke around 7:00 a.m. was major league baseball announcing the nlds schedule through tuesday. we have a graphic to help folks out so they can kind of start to plan their week around the fun games. saturday game one, first pitch at 6:37. sunday game two, also at 6:37. then tuesday the giants will be in cincinnati and that first pitch will be at 2:37. so first two games at 6:37, first pitch. then tuesday at 2:37 and those are pacific times. we have already seen some coaches from the reds.
11:06 am
official practice will be today for the reds from 2:00 to 4:00. then the giants will take the field from 4:00 to 6:00. throughout that period of time, a representative from major league baseball will come out, work with the grounds crew, and do an official inspection of the field to make sure it's ready for game one. they actually measure the mound, the bases, and the bullpen. so a lot going on. jon? >> thank you very much for the update. the entire post season comcast sportsnet bay area will bring you everything. pregame is one hour before every giants game and post game coverage after the final out. this is the only place you'll be able to see mike kreukow. that's here on comcast sportsnet bay area. with all the action going on this weekend, the question everybody wants to know and needs to know, what's the weather forecast going to be

11:09 am
business is picking up here. the a's will be on the field next. game one will take place here saturday at 3:07 p.m. sunday's game is at 9:07 a.m., which is drawing mixed reactions from a's fans. and tuesday's game in oakland is going to be at 6:07. back to game one. i had an opportunity to talk to jason verlander. i asked him about the line up. the second time he beat them, chris wasn't in the line up. the a's are a scrappy team. he said it was one of the touchest starts of his career. so the reigning mvp has a lot of respect for the oakland a's. back to you, jon. >> appreciate it. comcast sportsnet california bringing you sportsnet central. that's called october quest this year. post game coverage starts immediately after the final out. that's sportsnet central october
